Marketing changes at a rapid pace… let’s look back at this weeks focus on what technology has changed our daily lives.

1964. 100 sample 8 track players are shown to executives at RCA and major automobile companies.

1965. Ford Motor Company announces all new models of the Ford Mustang, Thunderbird and Lincoln will include 8 track players. In just two years the music industry was changed forever.

As the consumer’s appetite for easily accessible and portable music grew, the industry worked to develop improved portable music options. The 80’s arrived and as hair bands were on the rise, the compact disc was introduced and began its journey into the homes and cars of consumers across the globe. Early compact discs offered more storage capacity than many computer hard drives, and consumers readily adopted them throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s.

As the internet age boomed data became digital and hard drive storage quickly exceeded the capacity of compact discs. Music went digital, which allowed consumers to download and store countless songs and music videos. Consumers shifted towards the newly introduced portable MP3 players which could store up to 10,000 songs and later on would double as a cell phone.

Over the past 50 years radical change in the music industry has driven radical change in other industries as well. Consumers now demand products that are all-in-one. Gone are the days where you would have to pack an extra suitcase just for your electronic devices, now you can hold a music player, calculator, computer and telephone all in the palm of your hand, literally.
